Xbox Made A Good Move

Between the strange messaging around exclusives, the layoffs, and the parting of ways with its high-profile studios, the last few months have been a rough for Xbox. But, in some respects, Xbox has tried to improve their position with gamers along the way so, when the time comes, it's only fair to give credit where it is due.

At Gamescom 2026, Xbox revealed that it is launching an initiative that will allow people to take Xbox game discs, put them into their console (provided it has a disc slot--sorry Series S owners), and unlock a digital license for that game. Of course, there needs to be support implemented on a per game basis from Xbox but, for those of us with extensive physical game libraries, this is a positive step towards ensuring that our game purchases remain viable.

However, there are a number of questions that arise when thinking about this program and how it fits into Xbox's plans for the future of its gaming ecosystems. Next up on the docket for Xbox is the gaming console codenamed Project Helix, and there are some rumors around the hardware that could suggests Xbox's physical-to-digital is just for the now and not for the next.
